We watch music videos to escape the mundane & boring reality. Music videos are full of exaggeration & messages, no matter what genre/band/type. Location of the music video sets the mood and the feel of a music video, it represents the lyrics and the story of the song, helps the audience to identify with music and the artist. The location is full of meaning, no matter what genre of the music or type of music video.
In music videos, the pictures should 'add to the music' unlike in a film, where music adds to the pictures... (such as soundtrack in a film). The relationships between the visuals and the lyrics, the visuals and the music and visuals and the genre are very important & must make sense.
If a band is used in the music video, it should be signified by the members having an image and a specific look so that the audience knows it is an actual band, so that the members look unified and involved with each other. This is usually by the band wearing appropriate costumes, such as matching t-shirts, specific look (e.g. emo, rock, indie, etc).
All this week we are meant to focus on generating ideas for our music video. We should be doing that by listening to the music and imagine the pictures/ the storyline to go with the music. What the music feels like, how the beat & vocals make you feel, what would be the concept and what would be the colours, lighting and the style of the video/ the type of the music video.
It is important that the concept of the music video (when we come up with one) is consistent. So it's not just jumping from one setting to another for no apparent reason but so it makes sense, the pictures and settings should go with the music and the different sections of the song.
REMEMBER: MUSIC CONTROLS THE PICTURES.
