Location Recce.

I've taken pictures of the room that we are going to use as our character John's bedroom.
There is a lot of things that we need to clear from the bedroom to set it up for the music video
so in our production schedule we will need to include all the time for the set up until we can start shooting.

please note: make sure to
click on the picture to enlarge!

I also to took a picture of Air and Breathe in Dartford. This is the club we are going to use for our night club shots and perfomance shots in our music video.

Animatic

I've created the Animatic for our Storyboard. Animatic is a motion version of the storyboard to present your final idea & the concept for the video in more visual form. The animatic, just like the storyboard is going to be my guide to show me what shots do I need and how is it going to look like. It's very probable that my final video will be a lot different to my storyboard and animatic but the point is to learn new skills and improve throughout the work.

Props.

I gathered images of the most essential props we will need for the shoot including:
photoframes,
alcohol bottles,
something to symbolise drugs
microphone
set of lights
sound system
DSLR camera
charger for camcorder and camera
Sony recording camera
set of keys
money
bed covers and pillows
make up set
costume
tripod

Costume Design -Actors,

I've search the internet to gather examples of the costume I am going to provide my actors with.
There is one costume design for the male actor as he will not have a costume change on set. There is two costume designs for the female actor as she will need a costume change for certain shots.
I decided to use symbolism in my music video such as the use of red & white.
Red usually symbolises aggression and passion, whereas white symbolises purity or innocence.

The female actor will be dressed in a red dress and wearing red lipstick with a red mask over her eyes for most of the point of view shots in my video to represent the way her boyfriend is portraying her in his head (seeing her as evil but still feeling passion for her & love). In rest of the shots, the female actor will be dressed in casual clothing such as shorts & a jumper. There will be still elements of passion and love and anger in her casual costume such as her red lipstick and ribbon in her hair.

The male character will be dressed in a white t-shirt, symbolising his purity and his innocence - showing he's the victim in the story, being cheated on by his girlfriend. He will also be dressed in blacks & greys to symbolise his feelings (depressed, sad, disappointed) and also to show the differences between the two personalities in the story.

Final Shot List.

I've created the final shot list for our film. After I've done my storyboard and the animatic
I've noticed that I could improve my idea by removing some shots and replacing them with some better ones in terms of professionalism and advance level.
This shot list is going to be used during the shoot & this is going to be our guide for those two weeks.

Visual Style - Moodboard

^ This is our visual style for most of the video.
The dim lighting effect & the dominating blue shades of the video give it that sort of old film effect as well the grotty, dirty feel to it, which I'm aiming to achieve with appropriate camera techniques & after-effects when editing in our video. There is a lot of reasons why I thought this visual style would be perfect for our video, some of them include:
* It symbolises the impurity of the girl (Sarah)
in the video, impurity in their relationship & "dirty" lifestyle.
* It makes it look rough, just as our character's relationship is & lifestyle as well.

Initial Shot List!

I've created the initial shot list. It includes 64 shots. This is our detailed guide as to what we will film on the shoot. If we follow this list, we should have enough shots for the whole music video. HOWEVER,
both me and Adam, we need to go over the song & anitmatic again and agree on the shots. This is just a preview of what it might look like for now.

Test Shots - Main Characters.

Main Characters in our story line:
Sarah: Connie Ball.
John: Kieran Hanks-McComas.

I took pictures of the two main characters in our storyline to show who the actors are, and their relationship.
It is important that the actors get on with each other during the shoot because our story line requires the actors to trust each other and be comfortable with each other. We are quite lucky as our actors are in a relationship personally and acting out the story in our music video should not be too hard for them.

Digipack Analysis

Alesana is an American rock band, which combines different subgenres from hardcore, metalcore to screamo. The album I'm describing above is their 5th album. Two members of the band started writing short stories and the songs for the albums are being written around them - this was for the last two albums.
"The Emptiness" and "A Place Where the Sun is Silent" are both of the albums built around the story.
It's not only the digipack that follows the story but also the website & the music videos support and follow the theme of the album itself.

This task has helped me to see what I need for my Digipack when I create it and how can I make it creative and interesting & desirable to the audience. This is important because I need to make sure I can make it desirable enough so that they buy the album in a shop instead of downloading it off of Internet in mp3 form.

Idea Development.

Today we had a group meeting and we discussed in detail all the aspects of our story: the character types, the story types, the genre, the plot and structure of the video and song. We worked out the sections of the song and planned out what happens during the verses and choruses.
My contribution included helping to specify the genre of the music video we are going to make & deciding on some of the features in the structure of the video & character types.

Genre & Image.

Final Idea Brainstorm!

We brainstorm our individual ideas together and threw some ideas in suggested by other students, and we created a mind map based upon it as we did in our notebooks when discussing this. We listened to the song many times, thinking of different themes & different settings we could include in the video and this is what we came up with. We will post our final idea template soon. This will help us to narrow down what our actual final idea will be and what we need to include for our narrative & our music video needs to include.

Target Audience - Social Networking

We are lucky enough to have an artist with a quite established status in the local music industry. Pryce Oliver already has his own website and facebook profile, twitter account, soundclound account & a youtube account. He has a reasonably sized fanbase. Also with increasing interest in Dance genre by the public, there is a great potential for his music to become well-known in a short period of time.

I collected some screen captures from his existing accounts
to get an idea of what the target audience may be. By that, I mean,
what age group is his music targeting and what kind of an audience listens to dance music?

Instantly we can see that the age group most interested in this kind of music & our artists are adults aged from 25-34 years old. This is perfect because our initial ideas for the music video for one of his songs are touching quite serious, grown up subjects such as jealous, relationships, betrayal and drug and alcohol use. This information will help us narrow down what we want to include in our music video and what kind of scenes, themes and concepts can we include so that we target the above type of audience successfully.

References & Inspirations: Intertextual References.

I watched Trouble by Leona Lewis and I found some references and inspirations I could use as an influence in our project. I took some screen captures and annotated them in a form of a video. This will help me to narrow down what kind of shots I'd like in our video to suit our story as it's similar to the one in Leona Lewis's video.

Music Video Analysis.

These are two of my music video analysis. I've done them in two different ways as at first I thought stills would be easier but I decided after a while that a video version would be simpler to do. This analysis of Music Videos would help me get an idea of the different types of music videos, what they must include, what is the importantce of the relationship between the music and the visuals and the lyrics and the visuals as well as symbolism and how are different techniques used including: voyeurism, intertextuality or hyper-reality. I also will see how different videos break different conventions of music videos of their genre.

Music Video Preliminary Ideas,

MoonBeam Feat. Pryce Oliver - Excess (Radio Mix)

Idea 1
Starts off with the close up of the girl’s face, mouthing ‘excess’ with a smile, girl looking rough, make up smudged, drugged up look, wearing boys shirt, then close ups of the mess in the room (broken bottles, glass, mirror, clothes on the floor) a two shot, a mid shot of the boy looking at the girl, sitting next to her, her smiling mouthing another excess with a JD in her hand, goes to drink it, he gets up, different shot, grabs her wrist of the hand holding the bottle, jumps from his eyes to her eyes, then two shot, see the anger & tension as another ‘excess’ comes up. As the music speeds up he throws the bottle, they start kissing ‘passionately’, a flash of her kissing another man, he pushes her off, they shout, he walks out, slams the door as music goes quiet, lyrics start, he starts singing walking down the street/ out of the house, shots of him walking into the bar and drinking shots - intercuts with her getting make up and getting dressed (costume important, she’s wearing a tight dress, with stockings, high heels), - walks out of the bar, she walks out of the house, music speeds up, he sees her chatting to someone, music speeds up, he pulls her in, they argue, they push each other, possible ‘flashbacks’, she walks off/gets into a car, cuts to him slamming the door of his house, smoking a fag, singing, gets his records, cuts to him walking into the club, plays music in the club, sees her, gets off the stage, follows her, drags her home, locks the door, they kiss, a lot of intercuts towards the end of them fighting, kissing, smoking together, drinking together, having fun, as last excess comes on he’s asleep behind her, she mouths excess, winks and walks out the door dressed as usual.

Davide Loi & Pryce Oliver - Radioactive.

Idea 2
The beginning (intro) before singing: Door opens, people come into the house for a party, people greeting, kissing on a cheek, handing over drinks,

Starts singing: a girl walks in, the guy freezes, he looks up and down on her (shots p.o.v.), she walks past him and goes off to their friends, he’s standing still, everyone freezes, he sings (when music builds up), he walks round them, singing,

People come alive and start dancing when music builds up at 1:00, close ups of the dj somewhere in the corner, close ups on people dancig, people drinking, smoking, a shot of the boy looking at the girl from across the room between all of the people (either a two shot or p.o.v.’s) etc
Everything goes dark at 1:45, establishing shot of the room with people, the morning after, few shots of the kitchen/bathroom, people sleeping. Close up on his face, close up on eyes as he wakes up (colourful world), starts singing, sits up looks around the room, close ups on the mess, sees the girl, goes to make a coffee, he comes back girl’s gone

Music speeds up he drops the cup, runs out the door, runs across the streets, shots of him riding the bike, finds himself in some field, running around all lost, sees the girl on her own, sitting down, sits next to her, they talk, he hugs her, smoke cigarettes, song ends.
